MultHyFuel: Bringing the European Model for Sustainable Mobility to Bulgaria
The transition to clean and sustainable transport in Europe is accelerating, and hydrogen is at the core of this transformation. The MultHyFuel project represents a major European initiative aimed at supporting the large-scale deployment of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) by developing a unified strategy for multi-fuel contexts.
With Bulgaria at the very beginning of its hydrogen journey, this initiative comes at a critical moment. Currently, the country has just one operational hydrogen refuelling station, inaugurated in 2024 under the HITMOBIL project in Sofia. The potential, however, is far greater—and MultHyFuel provides the tools and knowledge to unlock it.

Why MultHyFuel Matters
Through close collaboration with station manufacturers, operators, and public authorities, MultHyFuel has:
- collected experimental data on hydrogen leaks and explosion scenarios;
- performed risk analyses across various station configurations;
- developed evidence-based recommendations for safety and permitting procedures across the EU.
These outputs offer a strong foundation for national and regional stakeholders seeking to develop hydrogen infrastructure in line with European best practices.
