Lithuania has taken an important step in the development of its hydrogen infrastructure with the opening of the country’s first green hydrogen station at the Port of Klaipėda. The new facility is designed to produce up to 127 tonnes of hydrogen per year and to support the decarbonisation of transport, maritime logistics and industrial activities in the port area.
The project targets several key applications: refuelling passenger cars, heavy-duty vehicles and ships, as well as using hydrogen for the port’s own operational needs. Around one quarter of the production capacity is intended for port operations, making Klaipėda a practical example of how clean energy technologies can be integrated into maritime infrastructure.
The project development began in 2023, while construction works started in the summer of 2025. The main equipment was delivered in October 2025, and the first green hydrogen was successfully produced in April 2026 through proton exchange membrane electrolysis. The station uses a 2.25 MW PEM electrolyser supplied by the UK company IMI, with engineering implementation carried out by MT Group.
The project financing amounts to approximately EUR 12 million, with around half of the funding provided through the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme. The project forms part of Lithuania’s broader efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, develop low-carbon technologies and increase the share of renewable energy in industry and transport.
“Only a few years ago, green hydrogen at the Port of Klaipėda was little more than an ambitious vision. It took us into uncharted territory, where we were often among the first to face challenges without clear solutions. The road was difficult, but it gave us invaluable experience. Today, we are proud to open Lithuania’s first green hydrogen facility and contribute to a new chapter in the country’s energy transition. The Port of Klaipėda has always connected sea and land routes; now it is also becoming a gateway to the energy solutions of the future,” said Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda Port Authority.
The opening of the station is a significant signal not only for Lithuania, but also for the entire Central and Eastern European region. It demonstrates how ports can become energy hubs that combine the production, storage, refuelling and consumption of green hydrogen in one place.
Lithuania has set an ambitious target to build 1.3 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030, enabling the production of up to 129,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. In March 2025, the country received approval for EUR 36 million in EU state aid to support hydrogen production and reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels.
From BGH2A’s perspective, this example is particularly important because it confirms the role of hydrogen as a real solution for sectors where direct electrification is more difficult — heavy-duty transport, port logistics, maritime operations and industrial applications. Projects of this kind show why the development of hydrogen infrastructure, a clear regulatory framework and public-private partnerships are essential for accelerating the clean energy transition in Bulgaria as well.
